The Night Before the Big Flight

December 23 feels different inside North Pole Mission Control.

The Christmas Eve flight is less than a day away, and nearly every chair in the Tracking Station is occupied. Maps cover desks. Weather reports arrive constantly. Elves move between stations carrying checklists marked FINAL REVIEW.

At the Navigation Desk, the route team studies Santa’s planned journey one more time. They check distances, time zones and the order of major regions along the route. Backup routes are prepared too, because Christmas Eve weather does not always cooperate with even the best plans.

Across the room, the Weather Team watches storms developing around the world. A snowstorm might be perfectly normal in one place while heavy wind somewhere else could require a route adjustment.

At Reindeer Monitoring, every harness identification signal is tested. The team checks each reindeer individually and then the entire team together.

Communications elves perform repeated radio checks with the sleigh. Santa needs to be able to receive updates from Mission Control wherever he is in the world.

Then there are the smaller checks.

Extra maps? Packed.

Emergency sleigh supplies? Packed.

Santa’s snacks? Definitely packed.

Nobody wants to explain to Mrs. Claus why Santa left for the longest flight of the year without something to eat.

As evening settles over the North Pole, the building grows quieter, but it never completely sleeps. Overnight crews remain at their stations watching weather systems and checking equipment.

Outside, the sleigh waits in the hangar. The reindeer rest. Presents are organized for loading.

Inside Mission Control, one enormous countdown clock continues ticking.

Tomorrow, Santa flies.
