The Day the Toy Factory Fell Behind

One December afternoon, the Toy Factory manager came into my office with news nobody wanted to hear.

One December afternoon, the Toy Factory manager came into my office with news nobody wanted to hear.

“We’re behind.”

A machine had stopped working. Several projects took longer than expected. A shipment of supplies arrived late.

The elves had tried to catch up by working faster.

That made everyone tired.

Tired elves started making more mistakes.

So I did something that surprised them.

I told everyone to stop.

We gathered the team and looked at what actually needed to happen. Some jobs were important right now. Others could wait. We moved elves from less urgent projects to the places that needed help. We simplified a few things. We fixed the machine properly instead of trying to work around it.

Then everyone took a break.

Yes. A break.

Because exhausted people rarely solve problems better by becoming more exhausted.

When the elves returned, the Factory felt different. There was a plan. People knew what mattered. Nobody was trying to solve everything alone.

And slowly, the work caught up.

When you fall behind, the answer is not always “go faster.”

Sometimes the answer is “stop, figure out what matters, and get some help.”
