The Elf Who Wasn't Very Good at Building Toys

Wren Winterberry wanted to be a Toy Builder more than anything. There was just one problem.

Wren Winterberry wanted to be a Toy Builder more than anything.

There was just one problem.

She was terrible at building toys.

Her toy cars leaned left.

Her block towers leaned right.

One stuffed dinosaur somehow ended up with three tails.

Wren practiced.

And practiced.

And practiced.

She improved a little.

But every day, she watched other builders work faster than she did.

"I don't think I belong in the Toy Factory," Wren finally told her supervisor.

Her supervisor looked surprised.

"Wren, yesterday you noticed that three boxes had the wrong labels."

"Yes."

"And last week you reorganized the parts shelf so everyone could actually find things."

"Yes."

"And you're the elf everyone asks when they can't figure out where something went."

Wren nodded.

Her supervisor smiled.

"You might not be a Toy Builder. You might be an Inventory Detective."

Wren had never heard of an Inventory Detective.

Mostly because the job did not exist yet.

It does now.

Wren became the first.

She is extremely good at it.

The North Pole does not believe everyone needs to squeeze into the same job.

Sometimes the best assignment is the one built around what you already do well.
